Built for Hardworking Professionals

For over 50 years, S&B Tools has stood for one thing: tools you can trust, from people who understand the work.

Some businesses start because someone spots an opportunity. S&B Tools started because someone got fed up. In 1970, our founders looked at the tool market and saw tradespeople getting sold short — overpriced equipment from suppliers who didn’t understand the job site, understocked shelves when deadlines were on the line, and customer service that evaporated the moment a sale was made. They decided to do it differently. More than fifty years later, that frustration has become a foundation, and that foundation has never cracked.

Where We Come From

S&B Tools opened its doors in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1970 with a straightforward premise: sell professional-grade tools to the people who actually use them, stand behind what you sell, and never waste a tradesperson’s time. Minneapolis was a natural home for that kind of business. It’s a city built by people who work with their hands — ironworkers, machinists, mechanics, and contractors who understand the difference between a tool that performs and a tool that fails when you need it most.

The early years were lean but clear-eyed. We built relationships with manufacturers who shared our standards. We learned the trades we served, asking questions and listening to the people on the floor, under the hood, and up on the scaffolding. We didn’t try to be everything to everyone. We tried to be exactly right for the professionals who couldn’t afford to compromise.

Over five decades, we’ve grown considerably — more than 10,000 products, a contractor program, volume ordering, and a reach that extends well beyond the upper Midwest. But the original logic hasn’t changed. Quality. Trust. Durability. Precision. Those aren’t marketing words at S&B Tools. They’re the standard we hold every product and every interaction to.

What We Stand For

Our tagline is Built on Quality. Driven by Trust. That’s not a slogan we chose because it sounded good in a meeting. It’s a description of how we operate.

Quality means we don’t put a product in our catalog because it’s cheap to source or easy to move. It earns its place because it performs under real conditions — not in a controlled test environment, but in the kinds of situations our customers face every day. Cold mornings in a shop. Tight deadlines on a job site. Equipment that has to hold up through a full season, not just a first use.

Trust means we say what we mean and deliver what we promise. Free shipping on orders over $99. A 60-day return policy, no runaround. Warranty support that actually helps. When you call S&B Tools with a problem, you’re talking to someone who understands the problem — not someone reading from a script trying to get you off the phone.

These commitments aren’t complicated. We think that’s the point. The trades don’t reward complexity for its own sake, and neither do we.

Who We Serve

S&B Tools exists for the people who depend on their tools to earn a living — and for the serious enthusiasts who hold their work to the same standard.

  • Automotive technicians and mechanics who need diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and shop essentials that keep pace with the demands of a busy bay.
  • Contractors and construction tradespeople — electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC techs — who move between job sites and can’t afford a tool that lets them down mid-project.
  • Workshop owners and industrial professionals who need consistent performance across shifts and across seasons, and who buy in volume because they’re outfitting a team, not just themselves.
  • Serious DIYers who’ve moved past the consumer-grade stuff and know the difference it makes to work with professional equipment.

We’ve built specific programs for the professionals among these groups. Our contractor program provides the kind of pricing, support, and account management that businesses need when tools aren’t a one-time purchase but an ongoing operating expense. Bulk and volume ordering options mean that outfitting a shop or stocking a fleet doesn’t have to be a logistical headache. We understand that at a certain scale, the relationship with your supplier matters as much as the products themselves.

What Makes S&B Different

There’s no shortage of places to buy tools. What’s rarer is a supplier that knows tools — and knows the work those tools are built for.

At S&B Tools, we’ve spent more than fifty years developing expertise that lives in our organization. We’ve seen trends come and go. We’ve watched brands rise to the standard and others fall away from it. We know which torque wrenches hold calibration through hard use, which impact drivers perform at the top of their class, and which suppliers back their products when something goes wrong. That knowledge is what we bring to every product selection decision — and it’s what our customers have come to rely on.

We’re also direct. Tradespeople don’t have patience for salesmanship, and we don’t traffic in it. Our product information is accurate and specific. Our support staff gives you a straight answer. If something isn’t the right fit, we’ll tell you — because a customer who buys the right tool comes back, and a customer who buys the wrong one doesn’t.

Our 60-day return policy reflects the same thinking. We’re confident enough in what we sell to give you time to put it through its paces. If it doesn’t meet your standards, it shouldn’t stay on our shelves either. That feedback loop keeps our catalog honest.

The Brands and Products Behind the Work

Over 10,000 products. That number only means something if the products are worth carrying.

S&B Tools sources from the trusted brands that professional trades have built their work around — manufacturers with track records measured in decades, not product cycles. We cover the full spectrum of professional tool and equipment categories: hand tools, power tools, diagnostic and measuring equipment, storage and organization, shop equipment, lifting and support, safety gear, and specialty tools across the automotive, construction, industrial, and maintenance trades.

We’re selective about what earns a place in our catalog. A product has to meet our quality threshold before it meets our customer. That’s meant turning down lines that couldn’t back up their specs and holding brands accountable when their quality slipped. It’s also meant that when you find something at S&B Tools, you can trust that somebody who knows tools has already vetted it.

Our catalog depth also means we can serve as a single source for professionals who’d rather not manage relationships with a dozen different suppliers. From the hand tools on your bench to the equipment on your floor, the odds are good that S&B Tools has what you need — and can get it to you fast.

Service and Support That Shows Up

The sale is the beginning of the relationship, not the end of it. That’s been our operating philosophy since 1970, and it’s the reason customers who started buying from us years ago are still buying from us today.

Free shipping on orders over $99 is a baseline. We know that getting your order without delays or hidden costs is part of what makes the transaction work. The 60-day return policy gives you real flexibility — not a narrow window designed to make returns difficult, but enough time to do the job and judge the tool on its merits.

Warranty support is where a lot of suppliers fall short, and it’s where we’ve invested deliberately. When a product fails under warranty, the last thing you need is to navigate a maze of paperwork and unanswered emails. Our team handles warranty claims directly and keeps the process moving, because downtime costs money and we take that seriously.

For contractors and volume buyers, our account support goes further. Dedicated assistance, streamlined ordering, and the kind of institutional knowledge that comes from working with professionals across many industries — we’ve seen your situation before, and we can help you solve it.

More Than Fifty Years, and Still Building

There’s something that happens when a business survives long enough to see the industries it serves change completely and stay relevant anyway. It means you were built on something real — not a market moment, not a trend, but a genuine understanding of what your customers need and a genuine commitment to providing it.

S&B Tools has been in business since 1970. We’ve watched the trades evolve — new materials, new techniques, new technologies — and we’ve evolved with them. The vehicles in a modern shop look nothing like what was coming off the line in 1970. The tools to service them have changed accordingly. So have our product lines, our brands, and our areas of expertise.

What hasn’t changed is the standard. Quality. Trust. Durability. Precision. If a product meets that standard and serves the professionals who rely on us, it belongs in our catalog. If a supplier can’t back their products, they don’t belong in our lineup. If a customer has a problem, it’s our problem to help solve.

We’re headquartered in Minneapolis, and we think there’s something fitting about that. This is a place that understands hard work, values craftsmanship, and doesn’t have much patience for things that don’t hold up. That’s the culture we grew out of, and it’s the culture we try to embody every day.

If you build things, fix things, maintain things, or depend on your tools to make a living — S&B Tools is built for you. We’ve been at this for more than fifty years, and we plan to keep earning that trust for fifty more.
